Welcome to the Coconino County Master Gardeners Association blog. The mission of the Master Gardener Program is to create a corps of well-informed volunteers, and to deliver quality horticultural education programs adapted to our regional high elevation environment. The purpose of the association is to provide support for those volunteers and Master Gardener graduates, continuing education, and opportunities to participate in community programs that increase the visibility and participation in the Master Gardener Program.

Meetings are held monthly on the 2nd Thursday from 600pm - 8;30pm. We meet at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church at 1601 N. San Francisco. This includes continuing education and a business meeting.

Reporting Master Gardener Hours

All master gardener trainees and certified master gardeners need to report their hours.
Beginning in 2010 certified master gardeners need to have 6 Education hours and 12 Volunteer hours in order to maintain certification.The on line reporting system allows you to report Education or Volunteer hours. You can sign in to record hours in the right hand column under Recording Volunteer and Education Hours. Just click on the U. of A.

Ideas for hours------
--Attend monthly meetings
--Work on an association committee
--Work at an informational booth for the Master Gardeners
--Be a speaker about gardening topics at a variety of venues

--Host a garden tour
--Work at a fundraising event (Plant Sale - Garden Tour).
--Work at a MG site (Olivia White Hospice, the Arboretum, Riordan Mansion, or school gardens (many others)). Check out the Assoc. Doc. & Forms under Volunteer Sites.
--Work in the Extension office
--Write an article for the newspaper column -Gardening Etcetera
-Volunteer with the Seed Library
Be creative! There are many ways to fulfill your hours. Just remember for volunteering it needs to be a non-profit endeavor or an approved for profit site.

Memberships solicited for 2012 – includes discounts at Viola’s, Warner’s, and Native Plant and Seed. Profits last year supported 2 master gardener projects, rent for facility, and sponsorship of the Arboretum newsletter.

6:40pm-6:45pm Volunteer Opportunity – Arboretum Docent Program – Katie Flint

Ms. Flint encouraged master gardeners to apply for and take the docent training at the Arboretum at Flagstaff. As a docent you can share your knowledge of our region, help to educate over 5,000 visitors and get gift shop discounts and continuing education opportunities. Herbs/Adding Spices to Your Eating Life: Identify, Grow, and Harvest Culinary Herbs for Your Enjoyment

Speaker: Sue Collins APN, FNP-BC, AHN-BC

Sue Collins, a local nurse practitioner and herbalist talked about growing and using herbs in Flagstaff. She used old tires, a pond frame and cinder blocks to create her garden in Doney Park. Especially the tires and cinder blocks hold the heat in and the cinder blocks reduce the effect of the wind. She spoke on the properties, medicinal and food uses of a variety of plants including rhubarb, chives, fennel, tarragon, vervain, sunchokes, yarrow, sage, chamomile and parsley. Debi explained the proposed changes to the bylaws. Crys Wells moved to accept the changes to the bylaws and Faith Brittain seconded. The membership voted to accept the changes.

2013 CALENDAR

It is time to submit your photos for consideration for inclusion in the 2013 Master Gardener Association calendar. Please send a print (4X6) of your digital photo submission to:

The 2013 calendar will highlight Master Gardener Favorites, so the theme will be a potpourri of garden-related scenes. Check through your photos for lovely scenes of your garden, favorite plants, your pets in your garden, a bountiful harvest, Master Gardener Projects (in process or finished or before and after), or ? All photos will be considered. You might even submit a favorite recipe that is made of locally grown produce or have you (or someone you know) made a quilt inspired by Flagstaff’s gardens? These are just ideas. Submit all photos that you think might qualify to make a beautiful calendar.


MG Program Happenings (Class, Conference) – Hattie Braun

There are 35 students in the Spring 2012 Master Gardener class. Hattie also said that there will be a Master Gardener class in Page in the fall. Ann announced the Feb. 14 Highlands Garden Conference meeting.

More speakers are needed for the Home & Garden show. Please contact Tess Wymore at tess_az@hotmail.com or 928-607-3673. Each speaker time slot is for a 40 minute presentation with a 10 minute question & answer period.


Coordination of MG Projects – Linda Guarino

Linda is updating the Master Gardener Project list. It will be ready for the growing season.


Volunteer Support/Social – Hattie Braun & Crys Wells

Crys Wells reported 96 volunteer hours and 15 continuing education hours for January. We know there were many members at the January meeting – please record your one hour of volunteer time and one hour of continuing education for the business meeting and education!


Volunteer opportunities:

There is a request for a speaker from the Gila County Master Gardeners for their March 24 meeting. They want someone from the cold country to talk about starting seeds.


Another speaker request comes from a mothers’ group in Williams. They want to know how to start gardens with children.


Volunteers needed to help create a Butterfly Garden. Contact Joe Meehan for more information (JMeehan@azhs.gov). Some details posted on the blog.


Loni asked for a volunteer photographer to take photographs at the meetings. Hattie said she would put the office digital camera in the equipment bag so there will be a camera available.
