Welcome to the Coconino County Master Gardeners Association blog. The mission of the Master Gardener Program is to create a corps of well-informed volunteers, and to deliver quality horticultural education programs adapted to our regional high elevation environment. The purpose of the association is to provide support for those volunteers and Master Gardener graduates, continuing education, and opportunities to participate in community programs that increase the visibility and participation in the Master Gardener Program.

Meetings are held monthly on the 2nd Thursday from 600pm - 8;30pm. We meet at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church at 1601 N. San Francisco. This includes continuing education and a business meeting.

Reporting Master Gardener Hours

All master gardener trainees and certified master gardeners need to report their hours.
Beginning in 2010 certified master gardeners need to have 6 Education hours and 12 Volunteer hours in order to maintain certification.The on line reporting system allows you to report Education or Volunteer hours. You can sign in to record hours in the right hand column under Recording Volunteer and Education Hours. Just click on the U. of A.

Ideas for hours------
--Attend monthly meetings
--Work on an association committee
--Work at an informational booth for the Master Gardeners
--Be a speaker about gardening topics at a variety of venues
--Host a garden tour
--Work at a fundraising event (Plant Sale - Garden Tour).
--Work at a MG site (Olivia White Hospice, the Arboretum, Riordan Mansion, or school gardens (many others)). Check out the Assoc. Doc. & Forms under Volunteer Sites.
--Work in the Extension office
--Write an article for the newspaper column -Gardening Etcetera
-Volunteer with the Seed Library
Be creative! There are many ways to fulfill your hours. Just remember for volunteering it needs to be a non-profit endeavor or an approved for profit site.

Spring Schedule for the the Arboretum


The Arboretum at Flagstaff begins their spring schedule of activities in March.

Docent training will begin at the Arboretum beginning on March 4th through April 30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 130pm-330pm in the Walter Reichardt living room. If you are interested in participating please call Regan Emmons at 928-774-1442x110 or e-mail at regan.emmons@thearb.org.
Attached is the schedule of classes being offered. LINK. The cost is $50. Also attached is a LINK to the Docent Commitment and Benefits Document.

If you find yourself enjoying those tours where there are lots of kids, consider becoming a Field Trip Leader and help with school field trips. Leading children around the arboretum is a BLAST!!!! Those training days will be on March 7, March 14, and March 28 from 130pm to 4pm at the Arboretum (more details on this training to come).

Current volunteers and docents will again be offered monthly Brown Bag Lectures beginning on April 1. Deb Noel will be talking about "Historical Gardens and Botanists". These lectures are from 12pm-1pm and you are encouraged to bring your lunch. A schedule for the season will be available at a later date. Some of these events are field trips and directions will be included.

For those who are already docents a refresher will be offered on April 11, from 130pm to 330pm in The Walter Reichart living room. RSVP to regan.emmons@thearb.org.  You are also welcome to attend any of the new docent lectures.

If you are interested in becoming an Arboretum volunteer spring orientation will be from 930am-1130am on April 11 in the Walter Reichart living room.

The Arboretum opens on May 1 and will be open this year 6 days a week. Closed on Tuesdays. Tell your friends, neighbors, and those you garden with. Spread the word!
